Optative

The optative of the verb vera ‘be’ is unique, as subjunctive forms take its place in all other verbs.

Examples: Guð veri með þér. ‘God be with you’
Verum góð við grænmetisætur! ‘Let’s be good to vegetarians!’
Stillið ykkur, verið róleg. ‘Cool it, be calm’

The 3rd person singular subjunctive is also used for the verb vera, in this sense, as in other verbs: Drottinn sé með yður ‘The Lord be with you’.
